BS 7671 18th Edition: Get Up To Speed with Metpro

March 2018

With the topic of fire safety in buildings ever present, 2018 looks set to bring new changes for electrical contractors through the 18th Edition of BS 7671 Wiring Regulations, and it’s only 5 months away.

As part of the previous update, BS 7671:2008 Amendment 3 introduced a multitude of new regulations, not least of which was the inclusion of a new requirement designed to ensure that escape routes were as safe as possible for civilians and rescue services in the event of a fire. Following the fatalities of two firefighters in 2010 and a recommendation in the subsequent coroner’s report, Amendment 3 of BS 7671 made it a requirement that wiring systems should not be liable to premature collapse. This entailed all surface cables and all cables inside plastic trunking in building escape routes not to be secured using only non-metallic supports (plastic). This measure was introduced in order to ensure cables were retained safely for as long as was necessary to protect firefighters entering a building in the event of a fire.

Three years on from the last update, the British Standards Institute is now preparing to publish the 18th Edition of BS 7671 and widespread expansion to cable retention is proposed to feature within this.

Expected to be available from July 2018 and take full effect from January 2019, the 18th Edition proposes to broaden this key regulation to include wiring systems installed in all locations, not just escape routes. This change recognises that firefighters will not necessarily access a building via escape routes and, as such, adequate protection should be provided.

With only 5 months until the 18th Edition of BS 7671 is launched, advising product compliance is critical and here at Metpro we are ready to help with our Chapter 52® Fire Resistant Range.

Designed in-house and fully compliant to BS 7671 Wiring Regulations, our range consists of fire resistant cable clips for PVC trunking and fire resistant white spacer bar saddles for PVC conduit.

Covering all sizes of PVC trunking from 25x16mm mini-trunking up to maxi trunking sizes, Metpro Chapter 52® Fire Resistant Cable Clips offer simple installation through their unique off-centre fixing slot, making them ideal for uneven walls and retrofitting. Cables are retained securely within the easy-fold tabs and the smooth-edged design ensures cables are not damaged when installed.

Metpro Chapter 52® Fire Resistant White Spacer Bar Saddles are available for both 20mm and 25mm diameter PVC conduit and are colour matched to suit most UK systems and offer an aesthetically pleasing finish.

All Metpro Chapter 52® products have been tested in the UK, exceeding the stringent requirements of BS 8434-2 including the shock and water spray trial undertaken by Exova Warringtonfire. The entire Chapter 52® range is fire rated to 930oC for 120 minutes ensuring 100% confidence for Metpro stockists and their customers. Full certification is available on request.

In addition we are also able to offer the required fixings for use in conjunction with our Chapter 52 products offering absolute compliance to both the current and proposed Standard.

Although the publication of the BS 7671 18th Edition is still a few months away, current regulations already require cables installed in escape routes to be retained by metal clips or saddles.
